I expect an awful lot from my vacuum cleaner and, talking to people I know; it seems like almost everyone else does as well. And it’s a sad fact that, of all my appliances, it’s my upright vacuum that gets the least amount of care – but it’s the one appliance that I can’t do without!
No matter how tidy the house is, if the floors and carpets are covered in bits, it just looks a mess. But week in, week out, I expect it to pick up just about anything off the floor, including pet hairs, bits of food, pieces of paper and even small stones. And having done this, I wonder why it gets blocked or starts making funny noises! That’s why I’m shopping for a new one, and this time, I promise to treat it better!
Now you’d think it would be simple to choose an upright vacuum, wouldn’t you? Well, so did I – until I started this research and found that there are dozens on the market. And with the high price tags of some of them, it’s really important to pick the right one. So after much research, I found that the Hoover UH70120 ticks all the boxes.
What To Look For When Buying An Upright Vacuum
I found out that there are several key features that are important to consider when choosing an upright vacuum:
- The amount of suction
- The filters
- The range of tools
- The maintenance
- The weight and ease of use
What I discovered was that, if you don’t know about these things, the chances are you’ll end up with a machine that’s not right for you. So let’s see what each of these means when it comes to the Hoover UH70120.
The Amount Of Suction
This is probably the number one and most important feature of any vacuum cleaner and Hoover’s unique WindTunnel Technology has been designed so that the suction starts lower – right down on the ground – and the dirt is sucked directly up into the chamber. What this means is that, unlike many vacuum cleaners, the dirt bypasses the motor and this helps to prevent dust being blown back into the room. The UH70120 also has a powerful 12amp motor, so there’s more than enough power there to give great suction.
Great For Allergy Sufferers
Why? Because the Hoover UH70120 has not 1, but two filters – a rinsible filter and a HEPA Media filter.
The HEPA filter traps fine particles such as pollen and dust mites that can trigger allergy and asthma symptoms. If you or anyone else in your family suffers from allergies, a vacuum with a HEPA filter is an absolute must.
And It’s Not Just For Carpets
Of course, houses don’t have wall-to-wall carpets in every room, and the Hoover UH70120 has been designed with five easily adjustable height settings so you can go from room to room, from hardwood floors to rugs to deep-pile carpets with a simple twist of a button.
A Tool For Every Job
Of course, vacuum cleaners aren’t just needed to clean the floors – they’re also used on upholstery, curtains, and many other hard to get to places.
The Hoover UH70120 has some great tools that are perfect for all those jobs:
- The upholstery tool that comes with it is great for removing pet hair from your furniture
- A 12-inch extension wand;
- A crevice tool for between couch cushions, back into corners, and baseboards;
- An upholstery/dusting brush for draperies, furniture, lampshades, and vents.
- A powered hand tool for removing dust, dirt, and pet hair from hard-to-reach places – especially useful for the stairs according to reviews.
- And the 8-foot hose is more than long enough to reach most of those high-up places that often get neglected.
What I really like is the fact that all these tools can be stored on the machine itself so they’re always there when you need them. This is a big plus for me as I’m always losing the attachments to my current machine in the back of the cupboard.
So, Just How Easy Is It To Use?
I know from experience that some vacuums are really heavy and I was surprised that the Hoover UH70120 weighs in at only 16.5lbs. And from what I’ve read of the reviews, they seem to have designed the wheels in a way that makes this model feel even lighter than that. This is great news for anyone suffering from back problems or any other mobility issues.
Hoover WindTunnel RewindThis brings me to the power cord, which is a generous 27 feet long so that you don’t have to go looking for a nearby plug socket. The Hoover UH70120 also comes with a brilliant cord-rewind feature – with a gentle tap of the foot pedal the power cord retracts automatically! There’s also a cord clip just below the handle on the back side of the unit to keep the cord out of the way while cleaning – they really seem to have thought of everything!
And The Maintenance?
I must admit that looking after my vacuum isn’t at the top of my priority list but looking at just how simple it is with the Hoover UH70120, I think even I can manage to look after it well enough to ensure that it performs well and lasts for years.
The brilliant thing about this model is that it tells you when maintenance is needed via the System Check Indicator. This is easily viewable, located at the top of the dirt cup. The indicator will show either green or red – showing you when some maintenance is required:
- Green – all systems are working fine.
- Red – this indicates one of 3 things:
- The filter needs cleaning;
The dirt cup needs emptying;
Check for a clog.
- The filter needs cleaning;
How easy does that sound?
Keeping the filters clean is also brilliantly simple:
The HEPA filter MUST NEVER be washed or rinsed. Cleaning is accomplished simply by tapping the filter to remove the dust. And as long as this is done regularly, it should NEVER need replacing.
The rinsable filter should be rinsed thoroughly for 2 minutes under running water, squeezing it occasionally to help the cleaning process. The big point here is that the filter should then be stood on its side and allowed to air dry completely before putting it back into the vacuum. This may take up to 24 hours.

What Others Are Saying
This upright vacuum has received great reviews from most consumers on the net, with an average 4 out of 5 from most reviewers on Amazon.
There aren’t many complaints for the Hoover UH70120 on consumer sites around the internet. A couple of consumers did express a concern that emptying the canister is a little messy but this was rectified by covering up the opening of the bag which the canister is being emptied into so that the dust can’t escape.
